This one-of-a-kind upholstered box was designed and handcrafted in my seaside studio in Edinburgh. It is made using sustainable materials and would make the perfect statement item of furniture for any room. Ideal for storing keepsakes, precious items and can also be used as a unique footstool.
The concept behind this box was the unseen materials used in upholstery breaking through to be viewed and enjoyed. These fabrics are often hidden away, but are beautiful in their own right and I wanted them to take centre stage. The design was based on the concept of fault lines in the landscape; the places where the materials beneath the surface emerge to create new form.
About this box
This original Sherbourne sewing has been completely reupholstered, having been stripped back to the frame. All original materials have been replaced. Instead of the old foam, biodegradable wool and cotton felt has been chosen to give padding to the lid and outside. The same combination on the inside gives a lovely cushioned feel alongside gorgeous textured wool for added luxury. The inside of the lid has a large pocket to store items such as cards or pictures. The lid is held in place with brand new high quality British brass hinges. The box is then finished with a vintage button, with a hand-plaited twine cord securing the lid to keep those precious items safe.
