Each box is a unique design that draws on the contrasting and colliding colours found in the everyday.
I draw inspirations from different aspects of my life - living by the sea in Portobello, the sweeping Scottish landscape and moments of reflection.

Built to be kind to the environment using sustainable and eco-friendly materials.
Ideal as memory, heirloom, sewing and keepsake boxes.
Every piece is an individual work of art reflecting a specific moment in time; an inspiration, emotion or memory.

My ethos is to use the finest materials whilst being kind to the planet. I strive to source local and British products which are sustainable and will stand the test of time.

Each unique hand-crafted box is designed to be a one-of-a-kind abstract or geometric form, combing a rich palette of colours, textiles and textures.
The designs draw on the concept that the world around us is not made of one form; instead it is contrasting textures, colliding into each other at different intersections.

Each box is completely unique, handcrafted and designed with attention to detail. Using high quality materials, I create items of furniture to be cherished through the generations.

My Ethos
As well as having a passion for colour and design, I have always been conscious of the impact we have on the environment. Because of this I strive to create boxes that are kind to the planet.
When creating boxes from scratch, I choose materials that are environmentally friendly and, where possible, locally sourced. The wood is high quality Scottish hardwood, sourced and milled at a local timber yard in Dunfermline. The wooden legs are hand-turned by a local craftsman. Instead of using foam padding I use wool and cotton felt which is biodegradable.
The unique design collage on the lid of each box is crafted from a variety of different environmentally friendly fabrics. I often use wool from the Isle of Bute, vegan leather and vintage fabrics.
I hate to see vintage sewing boxes heading to landfill, so as well as making new boxes I also rescue these when I can! As with the new boxes, I make sure that the same high quality and environmentally friendly materials are used to transform them into one-of-a-kind designs.
When you buy a Caroline Sewell Design, you are not only buying a hand-crafted unique item of furniture, but also a product made of the highest quality environmentally friendly materials.

ABOUT
SHORT STORY
My designs are based on original mid-century sewing boxes. I admire their clean lines and elegant design, and also see their potential to be used for much more. The idea was born to create pieces with the ability to store precious items which, rather than being hidden away, could take centre stage in any room.
My influences come from the desire to be kind to the planet whilst using quality products. My truly unique pieces draw inspiration from different aspects of my life. Many ideas come from my local surroundings: living by the sea in Portobello with its wide skies and sea which change daily in colour and form; the rich architecture in Edinburgh and the vast landscapes I visit in Scotland. As well as this, I have been greatly influenced by my family and their love of patterns, colour and textures. My Nanny Joy inspired many of my most colourful designs.
